Canon History:
In Kris' youngling days, she was a street rat. She didn't even have a name while she was at it, choosing not to spend time with the other street rats. As such, she never really spoke with others and she had to fend for herself rather than pay off bigger kids to help her. Being alone left her bitter and, more importantly, violent. She was an easy target for gangs of street rats who wanted whatever she managed to scrounge. After stealing a knife one day, she defended her stash and ended up killing two other kids. Like all the other beggars, they were forgotten and left to rot but it gave Kris a reputation on the streets to be left alone.
But her fate wasn't left to leaving her on the street. A passing old man, possibly seen as senile to some, picked her up off the streets. Despite his brand of insanity, he was allowed to walk freely around the city because his past and his skill with magic granted him that respect No, Kris’ ‘abduction’ wasn't willing but he had a power that she couldn't resist against. And he claimed she had the potential to use that same power. For you see, there are some who simply have the talent to cast magic. To be a wizard, one must be book smart and be very good at alchemy. To be a sorcerer, one simply needs to be gifted with the talent to use magic. So the old man lifted her off the streets to teach her how to use this talent and allow him to continue his legacy before he died.
Finally gifted with the first name Kris, she came to enjoy this magic thing. It made things she had learned on the streets seem almost pointless when she could perform the same tasks with a few words or the snap of a finger. While the man was half senile, he imparted what he knew on her. The problem is, he was an old man and the years granted him a lot of knowledge. Kris was new at this and Sorcerers can only learn so many spells without forgetting how to cast others. So she had to focus on a particular skill set. Kris found she had a particular affinity for time and space magic with a secondary skill set in damage dealing spells.
After more than a few years, his age finally caught up to him and he passed but Kris wasn't left out to dry. No, after the years of learning from him combined with her street smarts she retained from her youth, she had grown into quite a woman. A lazy woman at that, who used her magic as a crutch instead of a skill to be trained. But because of her teacher, her name was fairly well known since she was his only student. And that name caught the interest of some residents of Hell.
Her, along with an evil Cleric, a werewolf, and a skeevy looking Elf were summoned to meet with said people. This group, which fashioned itself in sleek black clothes, disliked how the ruler of the fourth level of hell was running things and wanted him dead in a fashion not too dissimilar to the mafia of our time. Not wishing to risk their own members but having loads of money, they wanted to hire an outside group of people who leaned more on the evil side. Kris, with her abilities and background, fit the bill mostly because she cared not where the money came from as long as she got it.
Unfortunately, this wasn't any kind of secret operation. Their entry point, target, and quite a bit of other information was leaked so when the group arrived in the 4th level of Hell, they were halfway across the continent and were forced to fight hordes of minions to just survive. Arriving at a coastal town, they decided it would be fastest to take a boat but all the sailors were hired out by their target, the head honcho here in this level of hell. To get around this, they simply leased out a ship and tried to sail it themselves. Unfortunately, the ship mysteriously started to sink halfway through the trip, leaving everyone stranded. But for a sorcerer like Kris, walking on air wasn't really an issue so eventually, they all made it back to land though it took a long time since they moved at a walking pace.
After a long hike through a jungle located in the mountains, they finally made it to the city that their target was in. It was more like fortress city though. To gain access, the group managed to get themselves arrested and Kris ending up being put in an anti-magic bubble since you can't leave sorcerers in jail without some level of protection. The fact that one man was a werewolf hadn't occurred to the jailors so after transforming, he broke out of the cell and busted out everyone else. Kris, in her bubble, served as a useful shield for the rest of the group as they ran through the tunnels underneath the city.
Making their way through the confines of the massive fortress, they located the room their target was supposed to be in. In a horribly cliched manner, he let the party in and started the final fight. One well placed Prismatic Wall and a shove from the cleric later, the ruler of the 4th level of Hell ended up dying from being transported across multiple lethal dimensions.
THE END
Or so Kris hopes. She got her money and a lazy lifestyle from completing what amounted to a mafia hit in Hell. Satisfied, she returned to her home and used the money to be even lazier than normal.
Game History:
When Kris first arrived in Queen of Hearts, she was quick to see what she could do that would be to her advantage. It wasn't long before she was approached by Akiha, who wanted blood, which Kris offered in exchanged for a more pleasant life of luxury than the whole staying by herself thing. Akiha agreed and Kris was brought into her household. There, she met Akiha's maid and house guard, all of whom Kris had no trouble getting along with.
Kris really passed her time here as something that was supposed to resemble a bodyguard but ended up being more like a lump on the couch. With a smooth smile, she found that she could get anything she wanted so it was simple to abuse. But she found herself closer to Akiha than she had been with anyone else and told Akiha how she felt about her, which was less than romantic but Kris’ feelings were more than that. The half demon didn't exactly reciprocate them but she didn't reject them either. Kris, who had never really been in this situation, thought it was the greatest thing ever. It never really hit her that two people probably should feel the same about each other.
When a girl named Amamiya attempted to harm Akiha, it did bring out the darker side in Kris for the first time around her new friends. Basically, Kris callously tried to kill Amamiya to end what could be a future threat but Akiha stopped her. Letting that darker side slip meant she had some explaining to do, which was difficult in its own way. But because she did do it, she felt ever closer to her somewhat abusive caretaker/pseudo-girlfriend. While it didn't change her character, it was something of a new chapter in her life. She did remain lazy and didn't really take part in things other people did, leaving her rather bereft of association outside of the mansion she lived in.
That's the point I'd be taking her from in the game though!
Personality:
To start off, Kris loves her magic. She loves it so much that instead of being something she should exercise with care and responsibility, it's become a crutch in her daily life. Can't start a fire? Fireball! It's a long walk to where she wants to go? Teleport! Kris blows through the amount of spells she can use daily quickly and it leaves her frustrated but there's not much she can do about it. Her self-restraint and ability to hold back and reserve spells is non-existent. So she often ends up complaining when she needs to do work and doesn't have a spell on hand that will assist her. Laziness leads Kris to be rather carefree in day to day conversations.
Thanks to her time on the streets and lack of schooling, Kris’ intelligence isn’t as up to par as it should be. History, mathematics, and even simple sciences are a little beyond her. All of her schooling was in magic so while Kris could give a sermon on how magic affects reality and how time and space are related, she can’t tell you why the sky is blue or help with three digit mathematics. She isn’t too prideful to try to convince someone else to help her when she needs it, though.
But as a Sorcerer, brainpower isn't an issue. That is left to the wizards. Instead, sorcerers rely on the force of their will to cast spells and the strength of her personality can be oppressive at time. Her ability to lie or scare others, if solely based on the words she speaks and the look on her face, is among her main talents and Kris doesn't mind using or abusing that. As a matter of fact, her carefree attitude mentioned above tends to be laid on thick so Kris can hide the darker parts of her personality, namely the parts where she doesn’t differentiate much between good and bad. If Kris ever decided to actively antagonize others, she’d certainly be a handful. Instead, she simply chooses to willingly disregard problems of others and not deal with anything that doesn't directly affect her. It’s not that she doesn’t care, she simply sees it more as a cost and benefit relationship.
Most of her actions are an extension of her background and wish to show herself as untouchable, either through a show of force or through bluffing. Kris tries to avoid inherent danger by showing that messing with her will end in a lot of pain. If Kris doesn't feel in danger, she's a pleasant person to be around but she won’t often stick out her neck to help out other people. However, tempt her with a reward and she’ll do what’s asked if the reward is big enough to justify the effort. In that way, she’s quite a mercenary. Not to mention that her moral compass is practically nonexistent. She’ll take actions that entirely benefit her and if murder is on the list, it’s not something that will make her blink an eye. Not having a proper parentage or guidance has left her in this sad state.
On the other hand, she has a lot of lingering sentiment for children. She doesn’t want other kids to have to live the life she did so she often spoils them. Gifts, head pats, or in extreme circumstances, having them live with her are all acceptable things for her. Kris also finds herself enjoying the friendship of others because she spends a lot of her time alone. If she likes someone, she’ll hang off of them when they’re together, simply enjoying whatever level of physical contact she can indulge in. It’s honestly not entirely healthy and as long as someone insists they’re friends, she’ll put up with a whole lot. Her time in her previous game did nothing to help this and, in fact, probably made it quite a bit worse. Dealing with Akiha, who can be a bit abusive, has left Kris thinking that it’s quite normal.
As for her enemies, Kris likes to keep it quick and simple. If her spells don't deal with stopping time or making a mockery of space, they're generally straight up damage spells. She rarely takes the time to want to teach herself anything that doesn't somehow deal damage or increase her own ability to do damage unless the spell helps her hide, another built in defense mechanism from her childhood. Being too obvious about things, in her opinion, is a good way to get yourself killed. But, once again, this derives from Kris’ instinctual want to stay in the darkness in dangerous situations where being threatening won’t ward off danger.
Third-Person Sample:
Kris scratched the side of her nose while staring at her toes. There was a debate going on in her head as to whether the next mission would really be worth it. Did the amount of potential money make up for the amount of potential danger?
The more she pondered on it, the better picture she drew in her head. Being an adventurer, she factored in things she could loot and possible things that she could still from unsuspecting victims. Okay, so the numbers weren’t really flashing through her head as much as the amount of things that looked valuable were possible to nab. Again, it was all supposition but it was getting quite tempting.
Curling her toes one more time, she made up her mind. Sliding on some socks - long trips on foot could be uncomfortable - and some shoes, she headed out the door. All she needed to do was take the mission from the board and invite along a few friends. A trip like this needed a proper party. Or more like people to stand between her and any enemies but not too many that the money would have to be split too thin.
Argh, more things to think about. No, no, she’d leave that to someone else. Kris just needed a way to reap the most money out of this. There were people she could trust to do that. First, find them and then get the mission and THEN advertise. Perfect.
Mognet Sample:
I'm looking for someone. Someone who is good at taking a lot of hits and not dying. Well, the whole not dying thing is the most important part. Mostly because my partner and I will probably have a lot of issues staying alive if too many monsters show up.
A big sword or an ax is definitely a bonus! It's kind of hard to fight back without a weapon. Akiha says you'll be paid fairly for your work but you might want to ask her for yourself. I personally wouldn't consider it too fair. I'd ask for about twice as much.
So, anyone interested?
